Mainers know that summer goes by in the blink of an eye – and yet, despite busy schedules, Yelp Maine still got together once a month for a little volunteerism! Our monthly #YelpHelps has been a really unique and heartwarming experience getting to know our local community in an entirely different way. And this summer we really got our hands dirty in an effort to keep our beautiful state beautiful. We spent a warm, sunny July night with Friends of Casco Bay keeping the ocean blue by cleaning up Back Cove – an estuary basin in Portland that has a 3.5 mile walking loop around it. Casco Bay belongs to all of us, and we are doing our part (and taking photos along the way!)!Sarah M: “Back Cove is such a beautiful place in Portland and we are lucky to have an organization like Friends of Casco Bay to help keep it clean. I am very thankful for them and glad this event helped me to become aware of their organization. ”
For the hot and humid month of August, Yelpers traveled to the Yarmouth Community Garden; their mission is to create an organic garden that provides fresh produce to area residents and seniors in need. Yelpers got creative as they painted the garden’s communal picnic tables and benches before enjoying veggies straight from the source. All of our fantastic artwork from the night can be found here!
Rodney M: “Love being able to give back and connect with community members… The Yelp gang is always the best group of people around. Like I said: I like me better when I’m with you!”
We were sad to see summer go, but ended it in the most seasonally way possible: taking skiffs to Little Chebeague Island courtesy of Maine Island Trail Association to chop down invasive species and clean-up tree damage from last October’s wind storm! Helping MITA protect the wild islands of Maine is important work, and we’re always glad to help in whatever way we can. Lots of seal sightings this year, so check out our reviews and photos.
Gabrielle B: “I had such a fun day helping MITA on Little Chebeague! As someone who grew up on a Maine island, I’m passionate about maintaining the natural beauty Maine has to offer… I fully support MITA and appreciate the work they do to maintain so many of Maine’s islands, and it blows my mind just how many islands allow camping!”
We love eating, but we really love giving back to the state that has given us so much. #YelpHelps is social and fun, and we’d love to have friends from near and far join us as we finish up 2018. Our autumn and holiday inspired volunteer outings are already posted on our Yelp Calendar!
